2018 – Don Sure

Never a Shaw Thing

Tournament favourite Don Sure surged from six shots behind to win the JWMGC XX by two shots from first-round leader Mark Gemstone after a titanic tussle between the two best players over the course of the weekend.

Shaw was delighted to put the ghost of 2017 behind him when he four-putted the last to let slip his chance of winning.

“I just kept plugging away. The pressure on us both was immense and JJ was playing so well I just had to try and hold on and see what happened at the turn. I birdied the par 5 on the 10th hole and that gave me the ascendancy to push on. I’m just so happy to have finally won.”

Shaw’s adjusted net score of -13 also beat the previous best of -12 shot by Mick Fight, finishing second in Wanaka in 2012 amid the usual rumblings of burglars. Shaw was uncertain as to where he would hold JWMGC XXI, with Bali, New Plymouth, and Northland being possible options.
