The Rise and Rise of The Burglar

Danny Muftit shot -23 and finished second. Any other year bar 2024 he would have won by at least 7 shots.

What the fcuk are the Handicapping Committee doing?

Since 2017, players in the JWMGC have scored an astonishing 122 under as opposed to 25 over for the previous 7 years. Whenever there is a high score under, the talk invariably turns to burglar, but what is a burglar in golf?

  • The Goal: Burglar golfers aim to manipulate their handicap, which is a measure of a player’s skill, to their advantage.
  • The Method: They do this by intentionally shooting high scores, which causes their handicap to increase.
  • The Payoff: Once their handicap is high, they can then win tournaments by playing to their true ability, as their handicap allows them to start with a lower score than their competitors.
  • Example: Ray Slobby, a member of the Royal Auckland Golf Club, was said to have deliberately entered a succession of poor scores which saw his handicap soar. He entered two post-Christmas tournaments, won both, but has subsequently been disqualified and banned from every Auckland golf course. Ray now plays undercover as a Jewish Investment Banker.

What is Stableford Scoring?

Unlike traditional stroke play scoring the objective with stableford is to score as many points as possible over 18 holes. If you play exactly to your handicap you should finish your round with 36 points, two points per hole.

In summary, the Stableford scoring system simplifies golf by rewarding you with points based on your performance on each hole. It encourages players of all skill levels to enjoy the game without the stress of counting every stroke.
